GBLT Refugees

Hello

Many of you who have attended my workshop on Gay Men’s Health & HIV Prevention showed much interest in some of the great free print materials (i.e. posters and pamphlets) produced by the Fondation Émergence Inc. Each year they develop campaign materials to coincide with International Day Against Homophobia (May 17th). This year’s campaign materials are now available for order online. Some materials from previous campaigns are also available in hard copy and many more in various electronic formats. Their web site also has links to other resources (e.g. teaching tools) so it’s worth a look around.

The link to the page to download the order form is http://www.homophobiaday.org/default.aspx?scheme=3098

Regards, Chris Aucoin

LGBT Community Development Conference, March 18 - 19

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project (NSRAP) has received funding from the Department of Economic and Rural Development (ERD) to host an LGBT Community Development Conference in March. The conference is also being sponsored by TD Canada Trust and the Marriott Harbourfront Hotel. Because of ERD's contribution and the gracious support of our sponsors, there is no fee attached to this conference and meals are all covered.

We are bringing together about 30 LGBT leaders from across Nova Scotia together with another 30 or so from HRM. The proper title for this event is Collaborative Strategies in Community Development and it is actually more of a workshop/creative brainstorming session than a typical conference. ERD facilitates the workshop; it is a model they have used successfully with other communities.

NSRAP would like to see the broadest possible community participation. We want there to be strong representation from the Transgender community, as well as from youth (19 - 25). We want LGBT community organizations, business leaders, professionals, and artists to be taking part as well. The workshop process requires only that you attend on Friday (8:30am - 5pm). The Saturday session (9am - 1pm) will be brainstorming about possible action plans to move forward the ideas generated the day before, and we anticipate a smaller crowd.

You are all receiving this email because you are all leaders, in one way or another, in our community. Because of the nature of the workshop, focusing on small group discussion rather than power point presentations and talking heads, the number of delegates we can accommodate is somewhat constrained. You are all receiving this email because you are all leaders in our community. We would love to have all of you present, but sadly, it just isn't possible. If you are unable to take Friday, Mar 18 off from work, we will quite understand, but please let me know.

However, if you are interested and can come for the whole day on Friday, please let me know. In addition, if you wish to let me know that you also identify as youth, transgender, as a business person, or artist, or if there is some reason why you feel strongly that you should be there, please don't hesitate to let me know. We will be making the delegate selection based on your replies.

Thank you all so much for considering this.

All the best,

Hugo

PS: There is more information on the attached sheet, and here are some "conference-in-brief" bullet points:

  • The conference takes place over a day and a half: Friday, March 18 (full day). Saturday March 19, (9am - 1pm).
  • The conference is really more of workshop, designed and facilitated by Economic & Rural Development (ERD).
  • They have used this model successfully with other community groups, including the Acadian and Mi'kmaq communities.
  • The conference format is built around small group work, so that the shape of the discussion is very much determined by the delegates themselves.
  • Friday March 18: delegates will work in small groups of 6 - 8 people. These groups will shift and change throughout the day. The morning will focus on sharing stories and experiences. The afternoon session will focus on identifying issues our community needs to address.
  • Saturday, March 19: this morning session will be a smaller group, again breaking up into still smaller groups, focusing on creating possible action plans around the issues identified the day before.
  • Not everyone needs to attend on Saturday, in fact we're anticipating a smaller crowd. This can also facilitate anyone wishing to attend the Fiérte Canada Pride conference sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
  • We will provide breakfast, lunch and coffee breaks on Friday. Delegates will have to make their own plans for dinner. Saturday's participants will also receive breakfast, coffee break, and lunch.
